Hi Dennis, Thanks for the phone #. I will call them and see what I can find out. Grandma Melissa did receive a widow's pension through James. She died when I was a little boy and I vaguely remember her. She lived into her late 90's. For some reason she was listed as Molisa on the pension app. She was the daughter of Abel Green Baggett & Nancy Beckum of Franklin Cty,Tenn. I believe Abel was related to the N.C. Baggett's going way back to Abraham & Nicholas Baggett. They moved to Milam Cty,Texas in the 1850's. Melissa & James were married in Williamson Cty,Texas in 1879 and later moved to Edwards Cty,Texas where they raised a large family. James was a rancher, and later became Justice of the Peace in Leakey,Tx. Precinct 1 Commissioner & Edwards Cty Sheriff from 1896 to 1900. He must have fell on hard times because 13 years later in 1913 he applied for a Texas confederate pension claiming partial blindness & memory loss. He died 10 years later totally blind and infirm with cancer. You know the rest. His father, Vernon Lockley, was married? to Frances Dennard. She was from Florida. Story goes that she was part indian, possibly Creek or Cherokee: I don't know for sure. Family rumors are they were not legally married because it was against the law for a white to marry an indian back then,so they lived together common law and had 3 kids. Their union lasted about 9 years. Thank God they didn't obey the law or I would not be here today. Regards, Charles.
