Co. F 2nd Texas at Shiloh

I could only find 57 soldiers who were with Company F at Shiloh. Several things could have happened. 1) Fold 3 did not have some of the surnames starting with some letters. This sometimes is normal for www.fold3.com And I could have overlooked some soldiers as I did this fairly quickly. But I don't think I overlooked that many. This should by no means interpreted as the entire roster of Company F of the 2nd Texas at Shiloh but rather just the ones I could locate.

Seeing enlistment dates post September 5, 1861 gives me the impression the company was not up to the standard strength of 100 soldiers. While there were a total of about 242 soldiers in Company F I was only concerned about those who were at Shiloh. Many enlisted or were drafted later in the war. American surnames started appearing within the ranks in 1862 and are not mentioned here.

By mid 1864 just a handful of the original soldiers were left who had enlisted in 1861. Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg along with disease had taken a severe tolls on the original members of Company F. It's no wonder why there are no post war letters or diaries about the original soldiers of Company F can be located.

The original soldiers in Company F appear to be exclusively German. While there were a great many Germans in the other companies of the 2nd Texas, Company F seems to have been unique in this area. However I have not broken down the other companies as I have Company F.

As far as I know this is the first time the soldiers have been listed like this. I was surprised to learn that other soldiers in Company F who had been wounded on April 7, 1862 were taken to Camp Douglas, in Chicago, Illinois. In my opinion one of two things happened to cause this. 1) The field hospitals were full and some soldiers were taken to the nearest hospital that could tend to their wounds. 2) The wounded Confederates on April 7, 1862 could have been wounded and taken prisoners at some other point on the battlefield.

The German states in 1848 had a revolution and chaos rose in various German states. With the promise of free land in Texas many of these future soldiers in Company F had arrived in Galveston, Texas just prior to the WBTS. According to historians in Galveston, Texas the majority of Galveston was German during the 1850's.

According to the Shiloh National Park they said this about the 2nd Texas on April 7, 1862. "The poor 2nd Texas Infantry boys moved forward (north) on April 7 across Sarah Bell's cotton field and were ordered not to fire as it was believed more Confederates were in their front. Instead, waiting in the woods just beyond the Peach Orchard was the Union Brigade of Jacob Ammen, part of Nelson's Division. This brigade was made up of the 36th Indiana, 6th Ohio, and 24th Ohio Infantry Regiments."
