Charles, Yes it appears the 2nd Battalion Texas Cavalry State Troops was a separate unit and was originally a six month unit starting in 1863. From my experience the Dolph-Briscoe American History Center located in Austin, Texas would know more about this particular unit. Their phone number is 512-495-4515.
When Melissa (James wife) filed for her pension #39000 I think it was she kept referred to his pension #23735. She stated she had been born in Franklin County, Tennessee which may be a relation to George Martin who posts here. ie the Dennard's in Franklin County, Tennessee. And I think her name was listed as Molisa on her pensions. Little things like she was buried by the Doran's funeral home etc which I'm sure you are aware of all of the details. If my memory is correct I think the two were married in 1879.
I agree with my colleagues as I don't see a Compiled Military Service Record for James. The civil war database offered this for the battalion.
