After their surrender at Vicksburg, many Trans Mississippi units [including the 2nd Texas and Waul Legion] crossed the Mississippi River to await exchange.

After exchange, the 2nd Texas and Waul Legion served in the defensive forces at Galveston for the rest of the war.

Mostly for administrative purposes, these units were assigned to brigades, and the 2nd Texas and Waul Legion were in the same brigade.
