Hi Dennis, the marker for James L. Lockley was probably placed over 50 years ago or before. James L. died in 1923 and has been interred at Rocksprings ever since. The original marker might have been replaced with a newer one way back, or possibly it is the only one ever placed, with a little retouch. I think that whoever inscribed on that marker,etc is long gone. I think it was James Norman and he passed in 1998. It could have been anybody,even James L's widow Mellissa who passed in 1948. The cemetery probably has the old records stashed in some dust pile and it might be impossible to track it down at this late date. That is a 92 year old tale. I understand your reasoning, and it is valid,but it's a needle in the haystack. The marker does bring up a question I wonder about,though...2nd Texas Battalion......That was a unit directly under the command of Col.Waul's Legion. That might be what James wrote on the pension app. Their muster records are probably incomplete. Remember that the defenders of Vicksburg surrendered on July 4,1863(30,000 men) It was a chaotic time and Gen.Grant gave them parole after they swore an oath that they would not take up arms against the Union again. To stay out of yankee prison everybody agreed,and then most of them joined other CSA regiments later to continue the fight. It was all very confusing who joined what regiment or unit.
