There was a man named "Choate" (Cross' guerrillas) and another named "Dark" (McNairy's guerrilas) found by Union cavalry at a house on Indian Creek,Humphreys in 1864. Choate escaped on horseback and Dark was killed. I believe that they may have been
rebel deserters from the 24th SS. Both guerrilla bands were notorious, operating primarily in nearby Hickman Co. Cross' men
executed 16 Union stragglers , 20 were rounded up, one escape and
was shot dead shortly after by a local farmer. The 19 other prisoners
were told they would be paroled. They were taken to a ravine in Hickman County and shot. Surprisingly, three men survived.Lying on
their dead comrades.
