The information you have is pretty good. Dickson Co. Residents -- Aaron James (Piney River south of what would become Dickson), James W. Shelton (near what would later be Pond), Euphrates Shelton (J. W. Shelton's nephew and living with him); Humphreys Co. Residents -- William Few (head of Huricane Ck), Dr. Payton Washburn (head of Trace Creek and near Few), R. Jonas Spicer (about 3 miles from Few). All six men were captured at the Irish Shanty (July 2, 1863) and taken to Clarksville and tried before military commissions. Aaron James was tried first (July 16-21, 1863). He was found guilty and sentenced to be hanged. The other five were tried together (July 24-30, 1863). Spicer was sentenced to be hanged. E. Shelton was sentenced to five years hard labor. The other three were found not guilty.

John Box (Few's brother-in-law) escaped, although Capt. John Dever (8th Ky Vol) thought he had been wounded. Before the skirmish started, Lt. John Curry (8th Ky Vol)went forward and observed the Shanty. He reported 20-30 men in the edge of the woods to the south of the house. There were 10 dozen eggs in a pot of boiling water at the house being prepared for the mid-day meal. The defendants said there were no men in the woods to the south. The defendants also said there were no shots fired by anyone at the Union soldiers. The Union soldiers were of a much different opinion.
