Before anything else, I would want to assemble the names listed for 2nd Mississippi Regt and check them out with service files. That process would probably answer a lot of quesions. As for soldiers being home on fulough from Joe Johnston's army and fighting at Shiloh, have never heard of anyone doing that. It would be a surprise to me.

As mentioned in my earlier post, companies of the 54th Tennessee reorganized with survivors from the 48th Tennessee at Corinth MS. This took place while A S Johnston's army was on the battlefield. Accounts by other members of the garrison of Corinth describe hearing cannon fire from Shiloh. Some insisted on going and left for the battle early on April 7th. They mention exchanging shots with Federals during the retreat late that day. For that reason, it's possible that the soldier mentioned could have been wounded and captured on April 7th.

To simplify, although not assigned to a brigade, the 54th Tennessee was camped near the Shiloh battlefield. The soldier mentioned actually belonged to the 54th Tennessee, so there's no question about unit assignment as there is with the men you mentioned with the 2nd Mississippi. After reviewing all the 54th Tennessee files, he's the only one listed as a Shiloh capture, so it's even possible that he went to the battlefield on his own.
