Jim, while at Louisville, Kentucky a few days ago, I ran into Private William Cunningham again as listed as being with the 54th Tennessee and captured at Shiloh, the source came from the newspaper "Daily Democrat" a Louisville, Kentucky newspaper. Also mentioned were the names of 2 more soldiers with the 2nd Mississippi Infantry who were captured at Shiloh. As you are aware the 2nd Mississippi was in Virginia at the time of the battle. My only conclusion is that somehow some soldiers of the 2nd Mississippi were given furlough back to Northern Mississippi as part of their sign on bonus and got caught up with the Confederate Amry moving toward Shiloh. One would assume they were might have followed a Mississippi unit to Shiloh? They were fighting for their land and the Union Army was a little too close to their homes. Of course this is sheer speculation on my part but I can't think of any other explanation other than they may have given incorrect names and units because they may have been in parole violation as an example. I'm sure issues like this will surface again in the future and perhaps someday we might have some answers. Keep up the good work with the 28th! Thx Dennis
