well that's another very important topic in your work seems to me--federal regiments as you know didn't do a very good job recruiting or as I found with Iowa they actually tried very hard but I think attrition simply outpaced them and it was a greater alure to join a new unit with folks you knew. These fellows were getting early outs and going into veteran units--fascinating. I don't know if anybody has treated this--again the prison camp records and provost marshall records would likely have these lists of galvanized men. I realize it isn't your rabbit trail but I just didn't know that this was going on that early in the war--apparently it didn't work too well given the shift to send them west in later years.
