Alan, I agree with both of you. I have access to all CMSR's and always try and use them as a source whenever possible. But as you know General Ainsworth and staff made a lot of mistakes starting in 1886, nothing intentional of course. I am starting to see a pattern especially with the 2nd Mississipp Infantry at Shiloh. I will be the first to agree that the unit itself was not at Shiloh but a few soldiers are showing up their as wounded and their regiment was the 2nd Mississippi Infantry. It is my speculation that they were caught up in the battle while on home on furlough and when ask what unit they belonged to when captured they told the truth, even though the 2nd Mississippi was still in Virginia. How many of them were at Shiloh, I have no idea, my guess is not many. Insofar as the 54th Tennessee at Shiloh, the soldier who was wounded and later died at Camp Chase has a tombstone that says 54th Tennessee Infantry and his CMSR's states he was wounded at Shiloh, as well as newspaper reports which I consider to be a secondary source. This of course is not to say that the entire unit or company was at the battle. The more a person researches Shiloh as an example, the more respect the researcher has for the battle and loss of life.
