Our discussion reminds me of the post-war exchanges of veterans who fought in regiments side-by-side during the battle, including those personally involved in the fighting around Oak Hill. It was surprising and perplexing to read their heated discussions about who did what, where and when. If actual eyewitness participants could not agree about what transpired, is it any wonder that the passage of 150 years has not resolved all of the controversies. I suppose the best we can do is gather all of the available primary source data and make the best educated guess. For my part, I will closely review all of the sources again and try to keep an open mind. I suspect that, like the veterans themselves, no two knowledgeable students of this (or any other) massive battle will ever completely agree. At least we have the consolation of knowing this battle will never truly end. Regards, Tom
