5th Alabama positions at Gettysburg

Here is one interpretation: On 1 July, O'Neal's brigade arrived on Oak Hill, with the 5th Alabama regiment on the left, well down the eastern slope. The brigade moved forward, closer to the Mummasburg road. Company D was sent ahead as skirmishers to occupy McLean's red barn, which still stands. The brigade soon launched their attack against the Federals (1st Corps) on the other (south) side of the Mummasburg road, the 5th mainly confronting the 88th Pennsylvania. But the 5th immediately received a severe artillery and infantry fire off their left flank from the 45th New York (11th Corps), and being simultaneously pressured from front and flank, the left regiments of O'Neal's brigade were compelled to withdraw. The brigade joined the final push toward town in the late afternoon, and during the night and most of the next day, 2 July, O'Neal's brigade rested on Seminary Ridge just north of the railroad cut. At dusk on 2 July, the brigade advanced with the rest of the division into the fields southwest of town, with O'Neal's brigade being on the left of the rear line, with the 5th just touching the edge of town. When this contemplated attack against Cemetery Hill was called off around 9 p.m., O'Neal's brigade marched by the left flank through the town and made their way over to Culp's Hill. The men rested in the brief hours remaining until daybreak on 3 July and in the morning they assaulted the strong Union works on Culp's Hill. It was a futile effort. The next day, 4 July, the brigade stood with the division along Seminary Ridge, with O'Neal's regiments very close to the same spot they had occupied during the day on 2 July; after midnight (5 July) they withdrew to join the retreat.
