Regarding the positions of the 5th Alabama at Gettysburg, I have walked out those positions with friend John Zervas who is a LBG at Gettysburg. He and I used the Bachelder maps to walk out Rode's approach to Gettysburg and their positions on day 1,2 and 3. My folks were in the 6th Alabama so their positioning is my interest. We approached Oak Ridge starting at the Cobean Farm ( now NPS office) and walked up the east side of the ridge before getting on the modern railroad line. We walked that line down to where the batteries were deployed. As we walked out of the woods, the McLean Farm House was slightly below us to the SE ( about 2:00 o'clock). Sorry, I digress. My point is that John Zervas lives at Gettysburg and is a LBG and he knows a good bit about O'Neal's positions since we walked out those positions. John can also show those who may be interested the difficulty Rodes' would have faced if they had tried to launch their late evening assault on Cemetery Hill from the Long Lane area to relieve Early. Of course, if Rodes had started earlier Cemetery Hill might not have been so heavily fortified. Anyway, a large subdivision covers that part of the battle field now and it is hard to get a perspective of the slope from Long Lane to Cemetery Hill. Hope that helps.
