Re: confederate regiments at Little Round Top

When the 44th Alabama was shifted to the left against Devil's Den, their movement and position can be fairly precisely determined. That's because they came out of the woods directly in front of the 4th Maine, which got off the first, fairly destructive, volley. These two regiments stood and fought it out until the 4th Maine pulled back for a subsequent advance into the opposite side of the Den, but the 40th New York and 6th New Jersey had in the meantime arrived and held back the Confederates at the southern end of the "Valley of Death" until the Union line collapsed at the Den due to the arrival of Benning's Georgians. This freed the 44th Alabama and other Confederates to enter the Valley to focus on Union troops occupying Little Round Top, but they could not move them and night brought a close to the deadly sharpshooting. Post-battle photographs show Confederate dead in the exact spot where the 44th came out of the woods to receive the 4th Maine's initial volley, although the 2nd Georgia subsequently passed close to the same ground. In the recent past the National Park has cleared this area of excess growth and restored the area to its 1863 appearance, so that it is now possible to imagine what occurred in that very spot.
