Re: confederate regiments at Little Round Top

The 47th Alabama had three companies (A, F and D) detached before their charge on 2 July, leaving an estimated 14 officers and 216 enlisted men to make the assault on Little Round Top. It marched off Seminary Ridge as the left center regiment of the brigade, but during the advance the two right regiments (44th and 48th) were shifted to the left against Devil's Den and the so-called Valley of Death respectively, leaving the 47th as the right center regiment - joined to the left of the 15th Alabama. The 47th and 15th went together as one unit up the steep and rocky west face of Big Round Top, and then down the northeast side directly toward Little Round Top (where Vincent's Union brigade had just taken position). If the standard company alignment was observed, Company B would have been on the far left of this independent command, with nothing on their left flank until they joined the 4th Alabama and 5th and 4th Texas already engaged at the foot of Little Round Top, these troops having having arrived minutes before because they took a more direct route. Based on my calculations the 47th Alabama would have been opposite the left half of the 83rd Pennsylvania and right half of the 20th Maine, and so if Company B was indeed the left company of the regiment, they would have principally confronted soldiers of the 83rd Pennsylvania, which was not much larger than the 47th Alabama. There they slugged it out until eventually the 15th Alabama gave way, which compelled the 47th to fall back as well, having lost about 40 men there. On 3 July, the 47th was in line behind a makeshift wall at the western foot of Big Round Top, again with the 15th on their right and nothing to the 15th's right. Some skirmishing took place during the day, but the 47th was in a particularly remote and well-protected position. So nearly all, if not all, the regiment's loss was sustained on 2 July.
