Re: confederate regiments at Little Round Top

Tracing battlefield positions is more art than science and even the best scholars will have different interpretations. With the best sourcses in hand, we can establish some probable locations and then try to fill the voids between. My interpretation is that the 44th emerged from the tree line south of Devil's Den, opposite the 4th Maine, whose position is known with clarity. The left of the 44th would be about on Plum Run, with the regiment facing northward. After the initial exchange of fire, the 44th may have pulled back slightly to take advantage of the tree cover, but basically remained there under a hot fire until Benning's Georgians cleared the Den and the Federals in the Valley (140th New York and 6th New Jersey) retreated. Incidentally, a few soldiers of the 140th NY resorted to using the bayonet to fend off their opponents, which would likely be the 2nd Georgia, although some members of the 44th Alabama may have been in the mix. With the Den and Valley cleared, Benning's Georgians and the 44th Alabama would direct their fire to the only remaining enemy in sight at that time, which is the Federal line on Little Round Top - the plentiful boulders near the Den provided excellent cover. When the U.S. Regulars and Crawford's Pennsylvanians in turn charged across the Valley they took fire upon their left flank from the Confederates in the Den and at the southern end of the Valley. Where the 44th Alabama ended up at the end of the day is anybody's guess. My opinion is that they were scattered among the boulders and trees not far from their initial encounter with the 4th Maine. Perhaps some of the boldest moved up closer to Little Round Top. After nightfall the units collected themselves together and the 44th Alabama built their rock wall breastworks at the northwest foot of Big Round Top, as the left regiment of Law's brigade, with the 5th Texas joining their left. Now I would consider that your ancestor could not fall where the parking lot stands, because that is west of Plum Run, and the left of the 44th initially ran eastward from Plum Run. As for the 48th Alabama, they initially emerged from the same tree line closer to Little Round Top, in the large gap between the 44th and 4th/5th Texas. The 48th fought from the woodline, principally against the 140th NY and Federals on Little Round Top, and perhaps later moved up among the boulders at the foot of Little Round Top. Post-battle photographs show scattered dead Confederates in the open just outside the woodline at this location.
