Re: confederate regiments at Little Round Top

The ranger knows his stuff well, as one would expect. The U.S. Sharpshooters did annoy Law's brigade as it started forward from Seminary Ridge, in particular the 47th Alabama. But while superb shots, the Sharpshooters were heavily outnumbered and did not delay the Alabamians long. The 4th and 5th Texas (about 600 men total) arrived first in front of Little Round Top, and eventually the 4th Texas extended their left to pressure the right of the small 16th Michigan regiment, until that flank was secured by the arrival of the 140th New York from Weed's brigade. The 4th Alabama soon came up behind the 5th Texas to reinforce their right for a few minutes until the 47th and 15th Alabama came down the slope of Big Round Top to extend the line in that direction. To the west, the 44th Alabama, facing northerly, pressured the south end of Devil's Den, while the 48th Alabama, also facing northerly, partially filled the gap between the 44th Alabama and 4th Texas. Reading the 48th Alabama's official report from a previous post, one might imagine that the left wing of the 48th Alabama confronted the 40th New York in the gorge, while the right of the 48th likely assisted the Texans in engaging the Federals on Little Round Top. Once the fighting commenced and during subsequent charges there was considerable mixing among Confederate regiments in front of Little Round Top. Two other interesting sidebars: When the U.S. Sharpshooters initially fell back, some went back to Big Round Top and annoyed the 15th Alabama in their advance; while others went to the south end of Devil's Den and annoyed the left of the 44th Alabama, but a number of the latter U.S. Sharpshooters were bagged when squeezed against the Den by Benning's advance. The other interesting item to note is that when Vincent's brigade first arrived on Little Round Top they immediately sent forward skirmishers (Company A of the 16th Michigan, Company B of the 44th New York, and Company A of the 83rd Pennsylvania) into the gorge and gap between the Round Tops. These skirmishers, perhaps 75 men total, ran right into the oncoming 4th and 5th Texas and were either taken prisoner or dashed back to their regiments, all the while being fearful of being shot by their own troops. The Federals occupied Little Round Top just in the nick of time, a few minutes later and the hill would have been securely in the hands of the Texans and Alabamians; upon this perhaps rested the fate of the battle.
