Re: The court martial of Colonel Jesse A. Glenn

Mr. Brooke,

Violation of two Articles of War to wit:

Charge I - Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.

Charge II - Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline.

The specifications were:

1. Procuring the name of a fictitious firm (Brooks & Taylor) to be signed to certain notes to be used as money.
2. Putting these notes into circulation, knowing they were not genuine.
3. Pretending, while knowing to the contrary, that said notes were not genuine, and receiving for them Confederate money and other articles of value.
4. Putting said notes into circulation, and receiving value for them, when he did not expect or intend their redemption as expressed on the face of the notes.
5. Causing the name of Brooks & Taylor to be signed to said notes representing thereby that such a firm existed in Savannah, Georgia, while he knew there was no such firm.
6. While Colonel of the 36th Georgia, entering into a partnership with one John T. Ault in the business of Sutler to the regiment; appointing Ault as Sutler, furnishing a certain amount of capital and a teamster and binding Ault to a division of the profits.

The second charge had added to it that Colonel Glenn entered into a partnership with one John T. Ault and agreed to supply him with a teamster, and in performance of said agreement allowed one Larken Dykes, an enlisted man to act as such teamster, and neglect his duties as a soldier for that purpose.

He was found guilty of the first charge with its six specifications, the second charge was dropped but he was found guilty of the single specification of the charge.

The bulk of the material is in his compiled military service record. You can find a synopsis in the Whitfield-Murray Quarterly Historical Society Journal, Volume 20, - No. 2, 2001, page 9 - 13.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
