40th Inf., 42nd Inf., and 12th Miss. & Ala. Cav.

A flag of the 42nd sold last year (1999/2000) to a private individual for over $300,000. Original asking price was around $125,000.

A flag of the 40th sold last Spring on eBay to a private individual for about $3,000. It was marketed as possibly original/possibly a vet reunion flag. However, it appears to be the missing flag from Vicksburg. (read ADAH's history of the 40th's flag very carefully...I don't believe that ADAH has the flag presented at Vicksburg)

The flag of the 12th Miss. and Ala. Cav. (aka 16th Confederate Cav.) was in the hands of the flag-bearer sometime after the turn of the century. A photo was published in "Conf. Vet. Magazine" of a reunion of the 12th with the flag behind the group of vets. Official records indicate that the flag was captured almost simultaneously at two different locations, but the flag-bearer says it was never captured...hmmm. A Medal of Honor was issued for the Selma capture; the other flag was supposedly captured at Ft. Blakely. I have found no record of return of the two "captured" flags, or any information of what happened to them (but, I haven't looked very much, either).
