Henry Seale40TH Ala. FlagFri Jan 19 16:34:43 2001 Something that I just thought of. Sometime during the Atlanta Campaign, Preston Gilder, color bearer of the 40TH was killed in a hot engagement dieing with the flag in his arms. Volunteers were called for to go back to the field and retrieve the flag. I have an account of this detailing who went, etc. to retrieve this flag somewhere here in my boxes of notes. If anyone desires, I'll find it and post it. Well, were I am going with this is that upon close observation of the flag (the 12 star "Gulley" flag) it appears to have some blood stains on it, probably from Gilder. If this flag that was sold on ebay a while back had no blood stains on it and the "Gulley" flag that the ADAH has does in fact have blood stains, this pretty much rules out that this ebay flag was an original wartime flag. 40th Flag Hayes Lowe, Fri Jan 19 16:59 40TH Ala.
