Hayes Lowe40th FlagThu Jan 18 23:08:09 2001 If I know the regulars here, like I think that I do, this discussion is not boring them. At least I hope that it is not. This is the sort of thing that intrigues me. Like an old timer told me yesterday...if we knew all there was to know, and all the artifacts were in the hands of collectors, there would be little reason for people to have a continued interest in the Civil War.To clarify about the lettering, the letters were cut individually from a white fabric (appeared to be cotton, but I couldn't swear to that) and each was sewn to the flag.>"It is possible that the ebay flag could have been replicated from the Gulley flag in that time-frame if it, too, was brought to Mobile -- just a wild theory."I don't think that this is such a wild theory. In fact, it shoots down the part of my argument that the flag was basically unseen until the 1950's! But it does raise the question of "why?". Why replicate it? And, even more puzzling is why it was in a Central Florida UCV camp (Jackson, Fla., if I recall correctly). This question is even more puzzling for a replica.Whoa! Is the ADAH 40th flag a fake?!
