Henry Seale
40TH Ala. Inf. Regt. Flag
Mon Jan 15 20:19:55 2001

There were only two flags of the 40TH that I am aware of and the ADAH has both of them. The first was a fifteen star St. Andrews cross battle flag that was presented to the regiment at Mobile in 1862. How this flag escaped capture at Vicksburg is a mystery to me. Possibly it was captured and later returned to the state after the war, but I am under the impression that it was not. The story of this flag is very vaugue. It has an attached streamer, if I remember correctly, that says "Vicksburg". I have an illustration of it from the ADAH. The second flag was issued to the regiment I am certain at Dalton, Georgia while they were in winter quarters. I have contemporary writtings to support this. It also is in possesion of the ADAH. It was a rectangular St. Andrews cross flag with 12 stars and the battles of Deer Creek and Vicksburg noted on it. The regiments latter battles were never added. At the consolidation into the 19TH Ala. in North Carolina on 09 April 1865 it was given to Lt.Col. E.S. Gulley who had commanded the 40TH since January 1865. In later years it was donated to the ADAH.
