Re: East Tenn. Unionists in the Eastern Theater ?

The soldier I'm researching was my paternal grandmother's maternal grandfather, James William Carroll from Sullivan County,Tennessee. In 1960 the Rock Springs Methodist Church in Kingsport celebrated their centennial by publishing a brief history of the Church and it's families. I'm sure it was done in those days " by word of mouth " with no access to records as we have today. The book states that James " died in the Civil War. " and " the army wouldn't allow his body to be brought home " and that he " was killed in one of the last battles around Richmond." I now believe James was a member of the Union 8th Tennessee Cavalry Company F. Grandmaw's paternal grandfather was Jackson Blakely of Company G 8th Tennessee Cav. They both were captured Oct.19,1863 at Zollicoffer, Tenn. I believe both died as P.O.W's at Danville, Virginia. I was fairly certain James was a Union soldier ( my little granny was a rock-ribbed east Tennessee Republican ! ) I was curious about any east Tennessee units that may have been in the eastern theater of the war. The only thing is there's about a 10 year difference in ages on this soldier's actual record. James would have been in his early 30's at enlistment. This soldier's record has what looks to be age 22 ! Over the years I've ruled out he could have been a Confederate in a unit from east Tennessee. Caused me a lot of headaches over the years ! Thanks for your interest and help !
