Re: East Tenn. Unionists in the Eastern Theater ?

It was hard to get there from here. As an example Iowa had one renegade cavalry company that somehow got into the 11th Pa. Cav. and served through App. C.H. Otherwise one brigade of infantry helped burn barns in the Valley in '64. The best most of the units could hope for was showing up on Pennsyvania Avenue in the Grand Review having discarded their newly-issued white gloves, etc. and eschewing the A of Pot's 17" long "stride." Truman had the same stride in his walks, but he was in the artillery. The glory in the eyes of the press of course and historians until literally our own generation (unless your just a young 'un) was in the East. I think we are influenced by the very broad state mix in the ANVa-that is worth looking at as to how that was accomplished. There wasn't an unrepresented state there save for the western border states and Arkansas was probably the least present. Even considering major troops movements between theaters I am unable to think of any corps going to the AofPot save for those who briefly augmented the Valley as mentioned. Things certainly went the other way, with Eastern troops heading west. Bottom line the central theatre, which is to say Tennessee east of the Miss.R. seemed to have a huge capacity to absorb troops and that magnetic effect seems to have done the trick. Poor old Iowa got largely stuck with Trans-Mississippi bayou duty, it was hard enough to be well represented in the Vicksburg movements. No Iowans were at any of the major Tennessee battles apart from Shiloh (our Battle of the Somme). They did get plenty of tickets to attend the Georgia Campaign, but that was after Chick-Chatt.
