East Tenn. Unionists in the Eastern Theater ?

Would I be correct to assume it would be " possible " but " not probable " for an east Tennessean to have gone through Confederate lines to Kentucky, joined the Union Army, and ended up in the eastern theater of the war ? Did any of the military units formed in Kentucky by Unionist refugees from the border states ( Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia ) serve for example, in the Army of the Potomac ? Did the Regular U.S. Army recruit from these men ? If someone could enlighten me on this it would help very much in research of a Civil War ancestor from east Tennessee.

Thanks,
Glenn Land
