Alabama Troops in non-Alabama Units

Ken Jones has posted a chart listing the counties of origin of Alabama Confederate units at Civil War Confederate Regiments from Alabama Counties; however, Ken states that "Occasionally, too, companies originated outside of Alabama (from Georgia or Mississippi, for example), and some Alabama companies served outside the state (in the 1st Mississippi Cavalry, for example). No attempt has been made to identify how many companies were provided to a single regiment, and no attempt has been made to identify where more than one county was used to make up a company".

To fill in these gaps and enhance the list, I would like to ask that you provide Ken and I the names of units which recruited in Alabama, the counties where they recruited and any evidenciary information you might have so that the list can be made complete.

I, for instance, have an ancestor who was from Stevenson, Jackson Co., AL, but was a member of the 17th Tennessee Infantry (CSA). It turns out that Company "I" of this regiment was composed of men from Jackson Co., AL and Franklin Co., TN. One historian/researcher has informed me that this might have occurred due to "better" wages being paid by the Tennessee units versus the Alabama units.

I've also read in a history of Jackson Co., AL by Kennamer, that a Kentucky Cavalry regiment (I believe the 12th) recruited in Jackson Co.

If you have this sort of information, please respond to this posting or my email address and help us give proper recognition to "all" the soldiers from Alabama wherever and with whomever they served.

Thanks,

Jim Martin
