Here's a story for your book. My ggfather Sanford M. Adams, b. 1833, was from Pickins Co. AL and served in Co. K of the 12th AL. His rgt, as you know, fought in O'Neil's brigade of Rodes's division, ANV. At Gettysburg, Sanford was severly wounded in a "charge" with a ball in the shoulder and left laying on field. We're not sure which part of the battle he was in; family story says Picket's Charge, but 12th did not fight in that one. His wound likely happended on 1st day when O'Neils rgt. was almost wiped out NW of Gettysburg in O'Neil's assault on U.S. Col. Baxter's rgt. In any case, Sanford was picked up by Union aide bearers and taken to Union aide station. A Yankee doctor asked his name and upon finding out it was Adams, the doctor said he was an Adams from Massachusetts and had him treated right away. The surgeon took off Sanford's arm and saved the minie ball. He put the bone encrusted object in Sanford's good hand for a souvenier. Sanford cam home to AL after that and passed down the ball as an heirloom. I still have the minie ball. Sanford moved to texas and died in Richmond, TX in 1896. He is buried in Morton Cemetary with CSA plaque saying "Co. K 12th Inf AL".
