My g-g-grandfather was born in Stewart Co., TN, married there, and lived there up until about 1872 or so, moved his family to Texas and was here by 1873 where he died in 1889 from meningitis. My g-g-grandmother applied and was approved for a widow's pension in Austin, Texas in 1917. According to her answers on her application, she remembered little, but this is what she answered
He served about 3 years in the Cavalry. He enlisted at Fort Donelson in Woodard Brigade, name of Captain was ___ McCauley, and this is all she knew.
I realize the Ft. Donelson enlistment doesn't jive with the 10th Tn. Cavalry, and the Woodard (probably Woodward's Brigade?}, probably had to do with some of the fighting at Dover or Ft. Donelson in 1863. The most promising part seems to be the McCauley, possibly being W.G. McAuley, captain of Company G. This, at least, is what someone suggested to me who has extensively researched the 50th Tennessee Infantry.
Any thoughts?
