Joe Allport, Charles was still in the 2nd TN Infantry in Feb 1862 when Fort Donelson fell to Grant (earning him the sobriquet "Unconditional Surrender" Grant). The 2nd was then given a brief furlough until the end of Mar. At that time, Charles re-enlisted in the Infantry for 3 years; however, after a couple promotions and serving in some very bloody battles like Perryville, and getting married, he resigned from the infantry for personal reasons ("dissatisfaction within the company") in Aug 1863. In Dec 1863 he enrolled in the 10th TN Cavalry.
