I know exactly what you mean about Indian names as I have many NA's in my family ancestry in OK and TX. Wow, are they hard to research for this reason and the government's attitudes, at that time. This might or might not be the place to share this but since I am researching one that is Civil War related, I'll talk about him.

His name/s are: Ambrose Williams aka Nittucachee aka Mittucachee (probably more). He signed the Choctaw Treaty of Dancing Rabbit in Mississippi. His father was supposedly Choctaw (maybe part Cherokee as well?) and married a white woman named Sarah probably in KY or TN. They moved to MS where Ambrose was partially raised. Something happened to his father and his mother returned to her family and Ambrose's white grandmother helped raise him. He was about 15 when he returned to MS. His signature on the Tready of Dancing Rabbit is Nittacachee. He fought in the Civil War and was killed in a battle. One of his descendants has a picture of him in his C. W. uniform. These are the facts we can prove about Mittucachee but little else is known about him: What unit he fought in? North or South? Where he enlisted? Where he is buried? What battle he was killed in? We sure would like to know more but there are few records to find. His descendants had a hard time getting on the final rolls but finally convinced the FCTC that they descended from Ambrose Williams aka Mittucachee aka Nittucachee (signature on the Treaty) and they were admitted in the early 1900's in Oklahoma. One descendant married into the Cherokee Benge Family and is on the Cherokee Rolls.
