I've been talking with my class instructor about Abraham Lincoln this week. This gentleman received a respectable education in Roane County TN (a hotbed of Union sentiment during the war) and is familiar with the Paulding County GA school system, having three children enrolled there. He never heard about Lincoln's goal to colonize of free and enslaved blacks, and didn't know that Lincoln opposed granting civil rights to African Americans. He also was surprised to learn that Lincoln rejected basic Christian beliefs for most of his life. He asked for specific references which I provided.

It's all well and good that you learned about the real Lincoln in school, but I'm not convinced that the vast majority of Americans possess anything other than traditional ideas about the man.
