Lest we lose perspective it is best to recall that three-fourths of Southerners owned no slaves and most slaves lived on large plantations and worked the fields under hired white men or black overseers, not exactly the best situation for developing close inter-racial relationships with their owners except occasionally in the case of house slaves.
