The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: A.J. KENNEDY, Capt. GA is not buried in N.Z.

Olwyn, we all need to be very cautious about such details provided by certain individuals, as research, in some cases, is often very incompetently performed, without any effort made to ensure complete accuracy. To see another example of such incompetence, where another VA grave marker was actually ordered, and about to be installed, in a cemetery in Georgia, go to the following web page, titled ROBERT FARMER FAMILY FROM AUSTRALIA: http://www.glynngen.com/history/people/farmer1/ and you will see further examples of such incompetent research. The web site's administrator, Ms Amy Hedrick, of Georgia, had a very hard time trying to convince the perpetrator that the soldier and the man he thought was this same soldier, were not the same person. Furthermore, as was eventually found, a forged document was used to obtain the VA marker. Obviously the VA do not have the time to check data or the facts, and tend to accept that any data sent in to them as reliable, which is not the case.
Thankfully, after a thorough investigation by the SCV in Georgia, as well as the VA and other researchers, the marker was prevented from being installed at the cemetery, and was returned to Washington for meltdown.
It should be noted that there are a large number of such cases of inaccurate research, but unfortunately, many of these markers have already been ordered and installed. Another one for a person claimed to be a Civil War veteran, was for a John McBride, buried in New Zealand, and claimed to have been a private in the 38th New York Infantry. If proper research had been done, it would have shown that the private of that name, in the 38th New York, had been killed in action, at First Bull Run, in 1861, and thus could not have been the person buried in New Zealand. Sadly, the marker installation ceremony for the John McBride buried in New Zealand was even attended by the U.S. Consul there, and, sadly the marker with the false data still lies at the cemetery.
If the U.S. government, and the Veterans Administration were aware of the very large number of such fabricated markers that lie in Australia and New Zealand, I am sure that they would clamp down, and prevent any more markers from being issued to persons in these nations. Thousands of dollars of tax payers money has now been wasted on these markers.
