Re: Fagan's Escort during Price's Raid?

Bryce, see my post of May 16th in this thread with notes from Wright's Memoirs.

To continue with those notes, let me add:

…now south of the Arkansas River and safe from pursuit-but no way to subsist so Price begin to disintegrate the army

Dobbins, Freeman and McRae were ordered to NE Ark to gather those who had deserted and stragglers and make their way to south Ark asap-so far as I know; none of these commands ever rejoined us
Shelby at his request was left in the Indian nations to recruit and afterwards rejoined us with his old command in fine condition
He sent Colonel’s Schnable, Hunter, Nichols, and Slayback with their commands into north Ark to recruit and live on the enemy but this was the last of their service as organized commands
Cabell and Slemons’ brigades were furloughed for 60 days [I think] to report for duty at Champagnolle in union county

I held my Regt together for several days for mutual safety as the enemy was still near at Ft Smith and Gray back guerrillas infested the area
…and there we turned south east towards Ark
On reaching the line at Polk County I turned the boys loose to make their ways home
We reached El Dorado on 11/20 men and horses totally worn out
A remnant of Slemon’s Bgde under Crawford of probably 300 and probably that number of Cabell’s under Monroe reported for duty at Champagnolle during Jan 1865.

Price reports: I arrived at Perryville, in the Indian Nation, on November 13th, where I met three wagons with supplies, and encamped, remaining over one day to rest and recruit my men. I had marched carefully and slowly, stopping to graze my stock whenever an opportunity offered. On the 14th, General Shelby, at his own request, was left behind on the Canadian to recruit. On the 2oth, Cabell’s brigade was furloughed, as also the brigade commanded by Col. W. F. Slemons, who was captured. On the 21st of November I arrived at Clarksville, where I received an order from Major-General Magruder to march to Laynesport, I. T., and there establish my headquarters. I arrived there on the 2d of December, 1864, having marched 1,434 miles. . .

11/18 Boggy Depot, to Major-Gen Maxey: I am directed by Major-Gen Price to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of the 14th and 15th and to express to you his grateful acknowledgments for supplying the wants of his troops as well as your invitation to himself A portion only of the command will go by Doaksville, Major-Gen Fagan and escort amid Col C. H. Tyler with his Bgde of recruits.
Tyler’s Bgde is directed to report at Clarksville, Tex. Gen Price himself, with the commands of Gen Shelby and Gen J. B. Clark, will go by the Bonham road to Tex, being governed by the earlier prospect of getting forage on this road and avoiding the rougher roads and streams on the Doaksville road, which on account of the late rains and weakened condition of his stock would be almost impassable.
