Major General (MG) James F. Fagan and his escort remained with MG Sterling Price as Price's Army of Missouri retreated southwest through Indian Territory (IT) in November 1864, following Price's Raid into Missouri, even after all four of MG Fagan's Arkansas brigades returned to their home areas of Arkansas. Only Fagan's escort reportedly remained with Fagan during Price's retreat to Clarksville, Texas and southwest Arkansas. Why did MG Fagan remain with Price?

I would appreciate any suggestions as to local Arkansas sources that I might access or relevant facts as to the composition of Fagan's escort during Price's Raid and any suggestion as to why Fagan remained with Price after all of his command had been furloughed. Lastly, I am trying to determine Fagan's (and his escort's) return route from near Boggy Deport, IT to southwestern Arkansas. It appears Fagan did not cross Red River to Clarksville to rejoin Price, nor did he go to Doaksville, IT as Price thought he would, as there is no mention that I know of, say by MG S. B. Maxey (com. IT at Ft. Towson/Doaksville), of such a meeting of Major Generals.

My current thinking is that Fagan basically followed Oklahoma Highway No. 3 from Atoka-Antlers-Broken Bow and on to Ultima Thule on the Arkansas state line, west of DeQueen.
