For those interested in reading about the physical condition of Price's Arkansas men and horses (from Slemons and Cabell's brigades) passing thru Doaksville / Ft. Towson, IT during the period November 12-17, 1864, and onward, your will find this info in the Official Records in Volume 41, Part 4 on:
pages / date written
1058 & 1059 / 11-17-1864
1063 / 11-18-1864
1067 / 11-20-64
1076 / 10-17-64
I believe almost all of Slemons' and Cabell's men had struggled for days hiking south along the old Ft. Smith-Ft. Towson military road, built in 1839, thru the rugged Kiamichi Mountains, before arriving at Doaksville / Ft. Towson. They would have passed a Confederate camp/hospital at Spencer Academy about ten miles prior to arriving at Doaksville. MG S. B. Maxey, com. Indian Territory, described the condition of the (militarily abandoned) Ft. Smith-Ft. Towson road in 1864 in the Official Records at Vol. 34, Part 2, page 875.
