St. Charles Battle aftermath

I have heard a story about the occupation of St. Charles, Arkansas, by Union troops after the steam explosion aboard the Union ironclad "Mound City" on June 17, 1862. One source shows that that the town was occupied by the 46th Indiana, I don't know if there were other units or not. Reportedly a girl by the last name of Dean was raped and murdered by a Union soldier. Two little black boys witnessed this murder, and reported it. The Union commander then lined up the Union troops and the boys identified the murderer, who was summarily hung (OK, so it is hanged). The Dean family still had the bloodstained dress belonging to the victim in their possession. The Deans reportedly moved to Pine Bluff sometime after World War II.
