The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: An interesting cross over on Alabama CMSR's

I see two John Blacks in the regiment, Private John Black, age 46 on enlistment, and John W. Black, age 21 when he died.

The problem with the CSR files is the file for John W. Black (46). This could be either Junior or Senior. Since they note age 46, one would think Pvt. John’s, Senior, record would result. However, John Juniors records are mainly recorded. Confusing, no?

John W. was 17 when enlisting, John (nmn) was 46. These cards were incorrectly transcribed back some 100+ years.

The best I could expect would be for Fold3 on receiving corrected data, would be to footnote sources in their records as the folks at the American Civil War Research Database do.

Here are some examples:

Sources used by Historical Data Systems, Inc.:

- Index to Compiled Confederate Military Service Records
- Confederate Veteran Magazine
- Confederate Dead at Rock Island, IL
- The Virginia Regimental Histories Series
- The Medical and Surgical History of the Civil War
- Supplement to the Official Records of the Union & Confederate
Armies
- Field Officers, Regiments & Battalions of CS Army
- Southern Historical Society Papers: Appomattox Paroles ANV
- Confederate Dead at Rock Island, IL
- Research by James A. Dunning

Here is what I find at Ancestry.com
