war pension records may be ordered through them also.

The 136th Regiment Virginia Militia (also known as 3rd Regiment, 7th Brigade, Virginia Militia) was called out by proclamation of the Governor of Virginia, dated July 13, 1861. Companies A to H are found to have served until September 9, 1861, when discharged. They were again called out by order of then Johnston, dated October 21, 1861, mustered in for six months from various dates in November, 1861, and discharged in the spring of 1862.

Robertson for the war, last recorded present on the September 8, 1863 muster, his name appears on a Poll Book of an Election for Delegate from the County of Henry, March 23, 1865, no other records**

* This company subsequently became Company B, 32nd Battalion Virginia Cavalry

Consolidated in September, 1863, with the 40th Battalion Virginia Cavalry, to form the 42nd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, which was increased to a Regiment in June, 1864, and designated the 24th Vriginia Cavalry

Silas N. Self, Private, Company H, 43nd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, enlisted March 8, 186_ in Henry County by J. R. Robertson for the war, first recorded present January 28, 1864, recorded on the Mar. & Apr., 1864 muster roll as detailed as Courier, last recorded present on the Novembre 22, 1864 muster roll, his file contains an Adjutant General, War Department note communicating with Virginia Department of Pension Commissioners, dated January 19, 1915 [Note, this would indicate either he or his widow filed for a Confederate pension from the State of Virginia]

I can offer two reason for the recording of company commanders. First, there may have been no company unit number ID. Secondly, during the Civil War, prominent local Doctors, Lawyers, Indian Chief's, etc. set out to organize companies for State and Confederate service and were known by their soldiers by the Captain's names. For instance, Monroe County High Sheriff John Crawford Vaughn, raised the East Tennessee Company, the 3rd Tennessee Infantry. Later, when he was promoted BGen., it devolved into Capt. Lilliard's company.
