Hi there - thanks for that. I have gotten more info from my cousin, and it appears your first person is the correct man. Here's what I received from my cousin:

CSA Military History: In 1861, John was a Private for the 3rd Virginia Cavalry, Co. A. In Jan 1863, he was a 1st Sergeant for the 146th Virginia Militia, Co. G and in 1864 he was a captain in the 136th Virginia Militia, Co. A.

So it seems he got promoted a few times. Thanks again for the help!!
