Hi there, I am trying to identify the Civil War unit for Phylander Slay Tipton. All I have is a reference to "Loty's Company, Balwin's Texas Cavalry" I assume that Balwin should be Baldwin, but maybe not. I have searched the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, Ancestry, and left messages on Rootsweb to no avail. Neither I nor anyone else can find an officer Loty or Balwin or Baldwin for any Texas Cavalry unit. I've noticed that most designations will say something like 21st Regiment, Texas Cavalry, Company A. All I have is Loty's Company, Balwin's Texas Cavalry and I can find no such thing. I'm beginning to wonder if he truly was a Civil War veteran. He sometimes went by P. S. Tipton, and his first name may have been spelled Philander or Filander.
