Re: Bradley County, Tennessee & the Civil War

Glenn,

Eli Long's report for this raid can be found in the Official Records, Series I, Volume 31, Part 2, Pages 560-565.

According to this his command consisted of portions of the 4th Michigan Cavalry, 98th Illinois Mounted Infantry, 4th Ohio Cavalry, 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry, 98th Illinois Mounted Infantry, 1st Ohio Cavalry, and 3rd Ohio Cavalry. He was reinforced on the raid by elements of the 3rd US Cavalry and the 5th Ohio Cavalry. This was a hodge podge of units cobbled from other brigades including the famous Lightning Brigade of Union mounted infantry.

The Tennessee Union units tended to be massed into all-Tennessee Union brigades (but not always).
