In need of assistance with a question !!! My paternal grandmother's paternal grandfather, ANDREW JACKSON BLAKELY Co.G, Union 8th Tn Cav. had two brothers WILLIAM ANDREW BLAKELY Co.A, Union 1st Tn. Cav. and HENRY C. BLAKELY Confederate 61st Tn. Co.B. At Chris Pope's site on the 61st Tn one can read 3 letters to home written by Henry while a member of the Confederate forces in Mississippi. In a letter to his wife, Henry makes this statement, " I heard of my brother as I came through Cleveland, Bradley County. " He then starts to tell of their terrible conditions with food and water without giving any further details. I'm wondering if anyone would know the significance ( if any ) about Cleveland, Bradley County in the Civil War. Was it a rail center the Union 1st Tn Cav might have raided ? Henry's letter is dated Dec.13,1862 at Jackson, Miss. Could it have been a " gathering place " for Union men trying to get to Kentucky and the Federal Army ? William and his son James H. Blakely enlisted in March 1862 at Camp Garber, Kentucky. The Blakelys were from Sullivan County. Could Andrew have been caught in Bradley County attempting to go through rebel lines ? He finally joined the Yankees in Sullivan County Sept 22, 1863 but was soon captured at Zollicoffer on Oct 19th. He reportedly died ( shot attempting to escape ) at Danville, Virginia April, 1864. Henry's Co.B of the 61st was a Hawkins County company but his wife was from there and he may have been born there. I would appreciate any comments, insights, opinions, and assistance !!!! LOL !!!!
