I did some work in Illinois and Indiana period newspapers on Fort Donelson and some of them listed the Confederate prisoners including blacks that were taken at the surrender. Some of these also stated what prisons they were sent to. These period newspapers are invaluable for detailed material that never made official reports. I used the Indianapolis and Evansville papers in Indiana and the Chicago papers. I would bet that the St. Louis newspapers had details too. I gave copies of all of this material to the Fort Donelson NBF library several years ago.

Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro has dozens of period newspapers north and south. Also, your library should be able to get rolls on Inter Library Loan.

I live 28 miles from Donelson and lead tours there all the time.
