pemberton gatewood was my grandmothers grandfather and john p gatewood was her uncle. she told me a few family stories before she died unfortunately she died while i was to young to ask the questions then that i would ask now, if i had the chance.

..the brothers were captain james henry gatewood-ucv company i, 4th inf. reg.- csa, he came to johnson county, tx. in 1869 from jameston, tenn. william gatewood he served in bledsoe regt. tn.. milton gatewood also serve in bledsoe reg. berry gatewood served in calvary 4th eg.,tn calvary (murrray's),calvary 8th reg. john p gatewood enlisted aug. 10, 1862 at camp mcginnis tn., abner lytel was 8yrs. old and did not serve. i am unaware of pembertons service.

the store told me by grandmother which she passed down from her grandmother, was as follows, the gatewood men were all away in service and the women had been left behind to take care of the home place, 4 carpet baggers road in a nd stold all the live stock which they sold to the union army, thes carpet baggers had a bad history of robbing and rapeing who had been left behind, grand mother gatewood said she had not been afraid, that the carpetbaggers wood had to sleep sometime and that she would have run a knitting needle through their eye. when the gatewood men returned home, they went to the little old sheriff who had been left behind because he was to old to fight, and he said he would not be able to do anything becase the union was in control of that part of tn. at that time. john gatewood said not to worry about it , that he had learned how to deal with cattle theifs, and he hung the 4 carpetbagger to a tree in front yard and the gatewwoods came to texas. 2 pinkerton men stopped john gatewood waling down the street and asked him if he was john gatewood that he matched the descrition ol a wanted poster had for him, he replied that he was jack smith and that he had some i.d. back at the hotel, they went to the hotel, where he open a large steamer trunk, pulled out two six shooters and killed them both, he had to then leave dallas. that was the end of the story.
