Re: Matthew R. Baynes, possibly CSA

Here's amplifying information on unit designations:

Company F, 4th Confederate Infantry was organized at Butler, Choctaw County, Alabama October 15, 1861, originally known as Captain Joshua Morse's Company (Andy Moore Guards), Alabama Volunteers, the 4th Regiment Confederate Infantry (also known as the 1st Regiment, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi Infantry) was formed about December 9, 1861, with ten companies; four from Alabama, two from Mississippi, and four from Tennessee. It was captured at Island No. 20, April 8, 1862, and after exchange in September, 1862, the companies were reorganized and transferred to other commands. Companies A, G, H, and K became (2nd) Companies I, A, C, and D, respectively, of the 42nd Regiment Tennessee Infantry and Companies B, C, D, D, F, and I became Companies C, G, E, D, F, and H, respectively of the 54th Regiment Alabama Infantry.

Captain Joshua Morse, resigned May 23, 1862 due to protracted illness, Wm. S. Smith, 2nd Lieutenant/Captain, resigned November 11, 1864, this regiment was consolidated about April 9, 1865 with the 37th & 42nd Regiments Alabama Infantry and formed the 37th Regiment Alabama Infantry (consolidated)
