Casey,

Based on your project, I would recommend you look into a small softback book, Noel A. and Mary Ann Crowson, "The Missouri Guerrilla Clothing and Accoutrements," Danville, Missouri: The Baker Plantation House, 2002. This approximately 50-page book has chapters on the guerrilla shirt, hats, saddles, spurs, firearms, and etc. with lots of black and white illustration taken from old books. It appears Mr. and Mrs. Crowson wrote to guide re-enactors on how to dress as guerrillas, so it is very specific and gives lots of different aspects of the same garments, hats, etc. This is very much a visual guide. The Crowsons gave on the copyright page the address of The Baker Plantation House, 60 Boonslick Road, Danville, MO 63361 to order copies of their book. Just a suggestion.

Also, Osprey Publishing has recently published "The Confederate Army 1861-1865 (6): Missouri, Kentucky, & Maryland" by Ron Field, Oxford, UK: Osprey Publishing, 2008. In the Missouri part of this book are three paragraphs about appearance of volunteers and guerrillas and the illustrator, Richard Hook, has crafted a color illustration page showing three different guerrillas of Quantrill's unit in what appear to be well-researched outfits.

What I also like is that each book only costs less than $20 or so.

An older book that has lots of black and white illustrations about the appearance of guerrillas is the late Carl W. Breihan's "The Killer Legions of Quantrill" Seattle: Superior Publishing Company, 1971, if you can still find a copy. Breihan included lots of old photographs in this, too.
