The Crescent Regiment was actually on Avery Island in south Louisiana on the date that Fulghum joined in north Louisiana, indicating that he may have been recruited by an officer of the Crescent on recruiting duty. That was very common. On a report dated Feb ’63 it was stated, “The company (B) is well armed but in great need of clothing and uniforms.” So he may have had to wear his own clothes for a while. That’s significant because the regiment camped in Monroe, LA for the winter of ’63-’64 where diary accounts say it was so cold that the ponds and lakes froze over and many of the soldiers had no shoes and their uniforms were rags.

Luckily for your ancestor he enlisted after the Crescent’s first major battle at Shiloh where the regiment had a total of 127 casualties. He probably was engaged at Fort Bisland on April 12-13, ’63. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Bisland Again luckily for Fulghum he was transferred to the hospital in Texas (with pneumonia) only days before the Cons. Crescent’s last major battle at Mansfield on April 8, ’64. There they had around 175 casualties. I would also recommend ordering his service records from this website.

I am researching the regiment and have created a “virtual cemetery” for its veterans. Fulghum’s burial location is at this link if you haven’t seen it yet.

If you have any personal information or photos of him I would love to include it in my notes. I can fill in a little more on his marches and locations but I don’t know anything more about the hospitals or records there. Please feel free to contact me at crescentregiment@comcast.net if you have any more questions.
