Margaret: I am happy to report to you, after an extensive search that required several beers, that Derrell G. Fulgham survived the war. His story is confusing because he was in three different units, but his records for one of those units is not listed with the other records of that unit proper. Therefore, the confusion (and additional brewski's!). His records for the Crescent Regiment are filed with that unit. His records for the Consolidated Crescent Regiment are, likewise, filed with that unit. However, as mentioned, he was with a third unit: He was transferred to the 4th Regiment CS Engineers Troops, Co. B. Somehow or the other, he wasn't supposed to be transferred to that unit, so he was re-transferred (back) to the Consolidated Crescent Regiment. However, he apparently did not return to the Consolidated Crescent Regiment, but remained with the Engineers Troops -- but no records for him exist with the records of that unit! You have to search the "Miscellaneous" National Archives Records (not the "Confederate Miscellaneous Records," mind you, as they are not the same group!) to find his Engineers Troops records, where they are listed alphabetically. He has records in this abstruse little group under both "D.G. Fulgham" and "Derrell G. Fulgham." (I think I was on beer six at this point.) The upshot of all of this is that D.G. had recurring bouts of fever and ended up in the Shreveport hospitals periodically. In mid-May 1865, literally days before the war ended in the Trans-Mississippi (that portion of the CSA west of the MS River), D.G. ended up in hospital again. He was furloughted for sixty days, beginning the next day, so he was, presumably, at home on furlough, safe and sound, when the war ended. He was apparently furloughted to his home, which is listed as something like "Barehead Grove, Bossier Parish, LA." (Can't quite made out the name, and can't find "Barehead Grove" on the Net.) You may order copies of his service records from the great guys at this site by clicking on the link at the top of this page. If you sweet-talk them, they may let you have all three service records for the price of one, since they all concern one man. (I do not presume to speak for the proprietors, though!) Hope this helps you. As for me, I'm taking two Alka-Seltzer's and hoping that, with the (late) morn, I haven't paid too high a price for this info (which was fun to find, anyway)! -- Jim Huffman, 43rd MS Infantry
